I tend to think of this as an astonishingly good hi-fi system ( total harmonic distortion THD on this device rivals dedicated machines selling for £800!) but it actually is a remarkable DVD player too! This stylish Dolby 2.1 system with slim stereo speakers backed up by a subwoofer. The main unit is compact & remarkably small and uses a top-loading disc mechanism with a translucent motorised cover.
The top has an ambient lighting effect from two blue LEDs, matching both the backlit LCD display and the subwoofer, but you can control the light via the remote which is a flat credit-card style item.
There’s no Scart, but most people have component on their TV and component with progressive scan is the best way to get a picture on your TV set thats not high definition. If you dont have component it also has S-Video and composite out. With the latter you can also access NTSC or PAL progressive scan. It does support MPEG4 formats, including DivX/AVI files used commonly for video downloads – which it handles very successfully – so this is good for broadband users and thus films on the net.
It also plays CD-R/RW, MP3, Video CD, SVCD and, unusually, DVD-Audio - this is very high quality sound indeed, and you should think of this box as not just a DVD player but also as a great sound system for your music collection. It would make a great machine for the bedroom as its so compact.
Despite its size, the picture performance is strong, with decent levels of detail and attractive colour reproduction. If you wish to connect via scart there is an adaptor provided.
The component output enables you to
switch between interlaced or progressive for clearer, smooth running pictures,
so this is the preferred route if you can use it. the 2 speakers give 10
watts RMS and the sub woofer a respectable 25 watts RMS.
